Automatic Categorization of Spatial Prepositions

چکیده
Learning spatial prepositions is an important problem in spatial cognition. We describe a model for learning how to classify visual scenes according to what spatial preposition they depict. We use SEQL, an existing model of analogical generalization, to construct relational descriptions from stimuli input as hand-drawn sketches. We show that this model can distinguish between in, on, above, below, and left, after being trained on simple sketches exemplifying each

Automatic Classification of Containment and Support Spatial Relations in English and Dutch
The need to communicate and reason about space is pervasive in human cognition. Consequently, most languages develop specialized terms for describing relationships between objects in space – spatial prepositions. However, the specific set of prepositions and the delineations between them vary widely. For example, in English containment relationships are categorized as in and support relationshi...

متن کاملInvestigating the Use of Games and Flash Cards in Teaching Spatial and Temporal Prepositions to Iranian Pre-Intermediate EFL Learners
One of the most problematic areas for teachers and learners in English classrooms is prepositions. Two types of prepositions in English are spatial (space) and temporal (time) prepositions. Prepositions are words linking two entities and thereby specifying the relation of the two. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the role of games and flash cards in learning place and time prep...
متن کاملObject congruency, conceptual competition, and annulled repetition priming: The influence of sortal restrictions on object categorization in verbal contexts
In Härtl (2003)), it was shown that congruous pictures were size categorized – i.e. a conceptual task – slower than incongruous ones subsequent to a localization expression containing a prepositional phrase (as in to stick s.th. on the ...). No such difference showed up with the intransitive prepositional variants, i.e. particles as in to stick s.th. on. In the current study, transitive activit...
متن کاملDescribing Spatial Relationships between Objects in Images in English and French
The context for the work we report here is the automatic description of spatial relationships between pairs of objects in images. We investigate the task of selecting prepositions for such spatial relationships. We describe the two datasets of object pairs and prepositions we have created for English and French, and report results for predicting prepositions for object pairs in both of these la...
